University of Manchester เกิดจากการรวมตัวระหว่าง Mechanics’ Institute และ Victoria University of Manchester ในปี 2004 ได้รับการสถาปนาโดยสมเด็จพระราชินีนาถเอลิซาเบธที่สอง ในยุคเริ่มแรกตั้งแต่ปี 1824 Mechanics’ Institute เป็นวิทยาลัยที่ก่อสร้างเพื่อให้ทำการเรียนการสอนแก่ช่างฝีมือ ต่อมาได้ยกฐานะขึ้นเป็นวิทยาลัยวิทยาศาสตร์เพื่อรองรับการเป็นเมืองอุตสาหกรรมแห่งแรกของโลก เมื่อวิทยาลัยเจริญมากขึ้น จึงได้ยกฐานะขึ้นเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีแมนเชสเตอร์ ในส่วนของ Victoria University of Manchester เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนจาดจอห์น โอเวนส์ (John Owens) พ่อค้าชาวอังกฤษ ก่อตั้งเป็นวิทยาลัยชื่อ วิทยาลัยโอเวนส์ ตามนามสกุลเจ้าของเงินทุน ตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านของริชาร์ด คอบเดน (Richard Cobden) ต่อมาเมื่อวิทยาลัยขยายตัว จึงได้ย้ายออกไปยังถนนออกซฟอร์ด และใช้บ้านดังกล่าวเป็นที่ตั้งของศาลจังหวัดแมนเชสเตอร์แทน จากนั้นจึงได้ยกฐานะขึ้นเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยวิกตอเรีย

มหาวิทยาลัยแมนเชสเตอร์ เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่ได้รับความนิยมมากที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของอังกฤษ และมีผู้สมัครเข้าเรียนในระดับปริญญาตรีมากกว่ามหาวิทยาลัยอื่นๆ ด้วยสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกในการเรียนที่เป็นเลิศและมีสหภาพนักศึกษาที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในยุโรป และมีชื่อเสียงด้านการวิจัยที่เป็นที่ยอมรับในระดับโลก มหาวิทยาลัยมีทั้งศิษย์เก่าและศิษย์ปัจจุบันที่ชนะรางวัลโนเบลถึง 25 รางวัล บัณฑิตที่จบการศึกษาของมหาวิทยาลัยจำนวน 91% ได้รับการจ้างงานหรือศึกษาต่อในระดับสูง หลักสูตรของมหาวิทยาลัยออกแบบมาจากผู้ที่อยู่ในภาคอุตสาหกรรม และภาคธุรกิจโดยตรง ทำให้ผู้เรียนมีทักษะทางวิชาชีพ ที่เลือกและนำไปประกอบอาชีพได้ตามที่ต้องการ นอกจากนี้แล้ว หลายๆหลักสูตรของมหาวิทยาลัย ยังมีทางเลือกให้ นักศึกษาได้ไปทำงานจริงในอุตสาหกรรมที่เลือกเป็นเวลาหนึ่งปี เพื่อเป็นการเตรียมความพร้อมสำหรับโลกแห่งการทำงานด้วย อีกทั้งยังเป็นสมาชิกของกลุ่มรัสเซลซึ่งประกอบไปด้วยมหาวิทยาลัยที่เน้นการวิจัย และกลุ่มความร่วมมือวิจัยเป็นการการันตีคุณภาพของมหาวิทยาลัยได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยม

University of Manchester ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศเหนือของประเทศอังกฤษ โดยเป็นหนึ่งในมหาวิทยาลัยที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในสหราชอาณาจักร แมนเชสเตอร์เป็นเมืองใหญ่อีก 1 เมือง มีชื่อเสียงจากการเป็นเมืองอุตสาหกรรมแห่งแรกของโลก และได้การยอมรับจากหลายฝ่ายว่าเป็นเมืองรอง (second city) ของสหราชอาณาจักร รองมาจาก ลอนดอน เมืองแมนเชสเตอร์เป็นศูนย์กลางศิลปะ สื่อ และธุรกิจขนาดใหญ่ และเมืองมีชื่อเสียงไปทั่วโลกจาก วงการกีฬาและเป็นที่ทราบกันดีว่าเมืองแมนเชสเตอร์นั้น มีสโมสรฟุตบอลชื่อดังอยู่ 2 สโมสร ด้วยกัน ได้แก่ แมนเชสเตอร์ยูไนเต็ด และแมนเชสเตอร์ซิตี
