University of York ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี 1963 และเป็น 1 ใน 24 สมาชิกของกลุ่มรัสเซลซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มมหาวิทยาลัยด้านการวิจัยที่มีชื่อเสียงในสหราชอาณาจักร โดยในช่วงแรกเปิดสอนทั้งหมด 216 สาขาวิชาสำหรับปริญญาตรี และ 14สาขาวิชาในระดับปริญญาโท, พร้อมกับเจ้าหน้าที่ของมหาวิทยาลัยจำนวน 28 คน โดยเริ่มก่อตั้งทั้งหมด 6 สาขาวิชาดังนี้ Economics, Education, English, History, Mathematics, Politics ประกอบกับอาคารเรียนทั้งหมดสามแห่ง คือ King’s Manor ตั้งอยู่ใจกลางเมือง York, และอีกสองแห่งเรียกว่า Heslington Hall จากนั้นหนึ่งปีต่อมาเริ่มก่อสร้างเป็น Heslington Campus และได้รับการลงทุนพัฒนามาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

เมืองยอร์คก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยชาวโรมันในปี ค.ศ. 71 และยังคงเป็นเมืองหลวงทางศาสนาอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ตั้งอยู่ทางตอนเหนือของประเทศอังกฤษ ซึ่งมีหนึ่งในสองอัครมุขนายกของสหราชอาณาจักรประจำอยู่ และยังมีมหาวิหารยอร์กมินสเตอร์ที่โดดเด่นและมีชื่อเสียง ซึ่งประกอบไปด้วยสถาปัตยกรรมที่หลากหลายตั้งแต่สมัยโรมัน เมืองยอร์คเป็นเมืองแห่งวัฒนธรรมซึ่งเต็มไปด้วยโรงละครจำนวนมาก อีกทั้งยังมีสถานที่ในการจัดคอนเสิร์ตหลายแห่ง อีกทั้งยังมีโรงภาพยนตร์ทางเลือกและร้านอาหารอีกมากมาย การเดินทางไปกรุงลอนดอนใช้เวลา 2 ชั่วโมง โดยรถไฟและวิทยาเขตอยู่ห่างจากตัวเมืองเพียงแค่ 20 นาที
