University of Essex ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1964 เริ่มด้วยนักเรียนทั้งหมด 122 คนพร้อมทั้งคณะครูจำนวน 28 คน โดยคณะที่เปิดสอนในครั้งแรกคือ Comparative Studies, Physical Sciences, Social Studies, departments of Chemistry, Physics, Government, Sociology, Literature, Mathematics, Economics พร้อมกับศูนษ์ภาษา (จากนั้นถูกเปลี่ยนเป็นคณะ Language and Linguistics) และศูนย์คอมพิวเตอร์ (ถูกเปลี่ยนเป็นคณะ Computer Science and Electronic Engineering ในภายหลัง). ในช่วงระหว่างปี 1970-1980 มีการก่อตั้ง ศูนย์สุขภาพ, Day nursery, Printing centre, ร้านขายหนังสือ, แกลเลอรี่สำหรับจัดแสดงนิทรรศการ และมีการก่อสร้างหอพักให้กับนักเรียนอีกด้วย จากนั้นทางมหาวิทยาลัยได้ให้ความสำคัญในเรื่องการพัฒนาสิ่งอำนวนความสะดวกให้กับนักศึกษามาอย่างต่อเนื่องจนถึงปัจจุบัน

University of Essex มีความเป็นเลิศทางด้านการเรียนการสอนและผลงานวิจัย 4 สาขาวิชา ได้แก่ Economics, Government, Sports Science และ Philosophy ได้คะแนนเต็มจาก The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education ในด้านการจัดการระบบการเรียนการสอนที่สนับสนุนการเรียนรู้ของนักเรียนอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ

มหาวิทยาลัยตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Essex ซึ่งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของกรุงลอนดอน และห่างจากกรุงลอนดอนเพียง 1 ชั่วโมงโดยรถไฟ มหาวิทยาลัยมีวิทยาเขตทั้งหมด 3 แห่งคือ Colchester เป็นวิทยาเขตที่เก่าแก่และใหญ่ที่สุด โดยในวิทยาเขตนี้มีเปิดการเรียนการสอนกว่า 18 ภาควิชา วิทยาเขตที่สองชื่อ Loughton เดิมชื่อ East 15 Acting School เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของมหาวิทยาลัย ในปี 2000 ตั้งอยู่ห่างจากลอนดอนเพียง 30 นาที วิทยาเขตสุดท้ายคือ Southend เป็นวิทยาเขตแห่งใหม่ล่าสุดของมหาวิทยาลัยก่อตั้งในปี ค.ศ. 2007 ที่ Southend-on-Sea ซึ่งเป็นย่านศูนย์กลางทางธุรกิจที่สำคัญของเมือง และมีบรรยากาศดี ทัศนียภาพสวยงามเนื่องจากอยู่ติดกับชายทะเล
