Bournemouth University ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี 1970 เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่ให้ความสำคัญกับรูปแบบการสอนที่สามารถนำไปใช้ในการทำงานในอนาคตได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ มหาวิทยาลัยมีทั้งหมด 2 วิทยาเขต คือ Talbot Campus เป็นวิทยาเขตหลักในการสอนทางด้านวิชาการกีฬา รวมถึงหอพักนักศึกษา ในส่วนของ Lansdowne Campus เป็นอีกวิทยาเขตหนึ่งที่อยู่ใกล้กับตัวเมือง Bournemouth เป็นศูนย์การสอนด้านการดูแลสุขภาพและสังคม และยังเป็นศูนย์สำหรับสอนระดับปริญญาโททางด้านบริหารธุรกิจอีกด้วย นอกจากนั้นยังเป็นหนึ่งในไม่กี่มหาวิทยาลัยของประเทศอังกฤษที่เปิดสอน Master degrees 2 ครั้งต่อปี คือช่วงเดือนมกราคม และกันยายน

Bournemouth University ตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Bournemouth ซึ่งขึ้นชื่อว่ามีชายหาดที่สวยที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของประเทศอังกฤษ เป็นเมืองตากอากาศที่มีชื่อเสียงในทวีปยุโรป สภาพอากาศมีความเย็นสบายตลอดปี ปริมาณฝนน้อยกว่าเมือง London สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวสำคัญคือ Bournemouth Oceanarium หรือเมืองใต้ทะเล และยังได้รับรางวัลดีเยี่ยมทางด้านความสะอาด, รวมถึงสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวทางวัฒนธรรมที่น่าสนใจ
